The redroot pigweed, Amaranthus retroflexus, produces an abundant amount of small, black, shiny seeds eaten by insects, mammals, and birds.. The weed grows to four feet tall in moist soil. Lower stems are often red or red-striped. An undesirable plant in fields and gardens, it is a native of Central America, now widespread in cultivated lands, gardens, and waste areas.
